Essential oils have been used by our ancestors for thousands of years for ceremony, healing and perfume. At Pyrgos, Cyprus, there are the remains of the oldest known perfumery in the world believed to be 4000 years old. Some of the essential oils found were rosemary, myrtle, lavender, bergamot and coriander. These would have been used not only for perfume, healing and rituals but also for trade between middle eastern and Mediterranean countries. In many holy books and writings you will find reference to the use of essential oils.
Essential oils come from flowers, leaves, twigs, fruit, resins and roots. The most common method for extracting these precious oils is steam distillation. Other methods include effleurage, maceration, expression, CO2 extraction and solvent extraction. Each essential oil contains therapeutic properties and can be used therapeutically, to beautify and to enhance both body and mind.
Today you will find essential oils being used in food, household cleaning products, for perfumes and of course therapeutically through Aromatherapy. There are many grades of essential oils used for these different purposes but only high quality 100% pure essential oils can be used for true clinical therapeutic aromatherapy.
